What 40 Years of Sugar Waxing Has Taught Me
When I first started working in the sugar waxing industry over 40 years ago, the beauty industry looked very different.
Natural beauty wasn't a trend. Sustainability wasn't something people talked about every day. Most people simply wanted hair removal that worked.
Over the years, I've watched the industry evolve, but some things have never changed. Looking back, here are a few of the biggest lessons I've learned.
People Care More About What Goes On Their Skin
One of the biggest changes I've seen is how much more conscious people have become about the products they use.
Customers now ask where ingredients come from, whether products are vegan, whether they're cruelty free and how they're made.
I think that's a really positive change.
People want products that not only work but also align with their values, and that's something I've always believed in.
Our Values Have Never Changed
One thing that hasn't changed is Sugar Coated commitment to doing things properly. We've always believed in creating products that are kind to skin, kind to animals and kinder to the environment.
Long before sustainability became part of everyday conversation, we were manufacturing products with those values at the heart of everything we did.
I believe that's one of the reasons customers continue to trust us today.
The Biggest Misconception About Sugar Waxing
One of the most common misconceptions is that because sugar wax is made from just sugar and water, it can't possibly be as effective as traditional wax.
The reality is quite the opposite. Its simplicity is one of its greatest strengths.
When used correctly, sugar wax is incredibly effective while being much gentler on the skin than many people expect.
Natural doesn't mean less effective. Sometimes it means better.
Success Is All About Technique
If I could give one piece of advice to anyone starting their sugar waxing journey, it would be this: Take a few minutes to learn the technique. Watch the tutorial. Follow the instructions.
Strip sugar waxing works differently from conventional wax, and once you understand the application and removal technique, there's no reason you can't achieve fantastic results at home.
Like anything worthwhile, there's a little learning curve - but it's absolutely worth it.
A Moment I'll Never Forget
Over the years, there have been some incredibly proud moments that have reminded me just how far Sugar Coated has come. One of those was being asked to develop a sugar waxing product for The Body Shop. Seeing something I'd worked so hard on become part of such a respected global brand was a real milestone in my career.
Another memorable moment was discovering that Renée Zellweger had purchased and used. It was one of those surreal moments that made me stop and think, "How did my little family recipe end up here?"
Moments like these are wonderful, but what I'm most proud of is something much simpler: hearing from customers who tell me Sugar Coated has transformed their routine, given them confidence, or become a small ritual they genuinely enjoy.
Those are the moments that have kept me passionate about sugar waxing for over 40 years.
Forty Years Later...
People often ask me what has stayed the same after all these years.
The answer is simple..... I'm still here!
I'm still passionate about sugar waxing. I'm still fascinated by how such simple, natural ingredients can help people feel more confident. And I'm still just as committed to making products that I genuinely believe in. Although the industry continues to evolve, one thing never changes:
Beautiful results begin with products you can trust.
