Does Sugar Wax Reduce Hair Growth? Plus 4 More Frequently Asked Questions
We answer the questions we're asked most often about sugar waxing.
With over 40 years of professional sugar waxing experience, Rosie has helped thousands of people make the switch to natural hair removal. Here she will be answering five of the most common questions to help you get the very best results from your Sugar Coated routine.
1. Does Sugar Wax Reduce Hair Growth?
Quick Answer
Yes. With regular treatments, many people notice that their hair grows back finer, softer and less dense over time. Results vary depending on genetics, hormones, age and consistency of treatments.
Rosie's Answer
Sugar wax is applied warm, which gently softens the skin and helps relax the opening of the hair follicle. This allows the hair to be removed cleanly from the root while making the treatment both effective and comfortable.
Because sugar waxing removes the entire hair from the root rather than cutting it at the skin's surface, repeated treatments can gradually weaken the hair follicle. As a result, many people notice that regrowth becomes finer, softer and less noticeable over time.
It's important to remember that everybody is different. Genetics, hormones, age and how consistently you wax all play a part in the results you experience.
Rosie's Tip
Consistency is key. Regular sugar waxing usually delivers the best long-term results.
2. Can Sugar Wax Help Prevent Ingrown Hairs?
Quick Answer
Sugar waxing can help minimise ingrown hairs by gently exfoliating the skin while removing hair from the root. Combined with good aftercare, many people notice fewer ingrown hairs over time.
Rosie's Answer
One of the benefits of sugar waxing is that it naturally exfoliates the skin as it removes the hair. By lifting away dead skin cells, the skin's surface stays clearer, allowing new hairs to grow through more easily instead of becoming trapped beneath the skin.
Over time, regular sugar waxing often encourages finer, softer regrowth, making hairs less likely to curl back into the follicle.
While no hair removal method can completely prevent ingrown hairs, combining sugar waxing with regular exfoliation and moisturising can significantly help minimise them.
Rosie's Tip
Exfoliate and keep your skin moisturised between treatments to help maintain smooth, healthy skin.
3. Why Isn't My Sugar Wax Working?
Quick Answer
In most cases, it's not the product - it's the technique. Correct preparation, consistency and strip removal all make a big difference.
Rosie's Answer
If your sugar wax isn't performing as expected, check these common areas:
-
Prepare your skin properly: Make sure your skin is completely clean. Oils, moisturisers and residue prevent the sugar wax from gripping the hair effectively.
-
Don't skip the talc: A light dusting of talc absorbs moisture and helps lift the hairs away from the skin. Try Sugar Coated talc here
-
Warm the product correctly: Sugar wax should have the consistency of honey. Too cold and it won't spread easily. Too warm and it becomes too thin to grip the hairs properly.
-
Check your hair length: Hair should ideally be around 5–10 mm long (approximately the size of a grain of rice).
-
Remove the strip correctly: Always pull the strip back swiftly and parallel to the skin, never upwards. This removes the hair cleanly from the root while helping minimise discomfort.
-
Consider the weather: Warm weather and humidity can create moisture on the skin. If this happens, simply apply a light dusting of talc before each application to absorb excess moisture and improve grip.

4. Can You Sugar Wax Your Face?
Quick Answer
Yes. Sugar waxing is suitable for facial hair removal when used correctly and can be used on areas including the upper lip, chin, cheeks and jawline.
Rosie's Answer
Sugar waxing removes facial hair from the root, helping skin stay smoother for longer than shaving. With the correct technique, it's a gentle and effective way to remove unwanted facial hair while naturally exfoliating the skin.
For those specifically treating the face, we also offer our Facial Sugar Wax, which has been infused with lavender to create a gentle, calming waxing experience for delicate facial areas. It's a lovely option for anyone looking for a natural approach to facial hair removal.
As with any facial treatment, it's important to treat delicate skin with care.
If you have very sensitive skin, are using prescription acne medication, or have recently had a chemical peel, laser treatment or microdermabrasion, allow your skin to recover fully before waxing.
If you're ever unsure, seek advice from your healthcare professional.
Rosie's Tip
Always patch test before using any new product on the face. If you're looking for a product specifically designed for delicate facial areas, our Facial Sugar Wax infused with Lavender is a great place to start.
5. Can I Sugar Wax While Pregnant?
Quick Answer
Sugar Coated sugar wax is made using 100% natural ingredients and is suitable for many expectant mothers. However, if you're unsure, always follow the advice of your doctor or midwife.
Rosie's Answer
Pregnancy causes hormonal changes that can make the skin more sensitive than usual, so waxing may feel different to what you're used to.
Many women continue sugar waxing throughout pregnancy, but if you have any concerns or a high-risk pregnancy, always seek medical advice first.
Your comfort and safety should always come first.
Rosie's Tip
If your skin feels more sensitive than usual, try a small patch test first before completing a full treatment.
